The 23-year-old Super Eagle joined the promoted squad on a five-year contract ahead of the new season
Brentford have confirmed the signing of Nigerian international Frank Onyeka from Danish club FC Midtjylland.
The promoted team have announced the arrival of the Super Eagle with a five-year contract, and he becomes the club’s first signing ahead of the new season.
“Brentford has finalized the signing of Nigerian international midfielder Frank Onyeka, subject to international clearance,” Brentford said in a statement on their official site.
“A work permit for the 23-year-old was received over the weekend and he underwent a medical examination. Frank will join FC Midtjylland, where Brentford owner Matthew Benham owns the majority of shares, for an undisclosed amount and has signed a five-year contract.
“He arrived in the UK yesterday [Monday], on July 19, and will now undergo a period of quarantine before joining the team for training. “
The statement continued: “Frank has spent his entire professional career with FCM, as they are called, and has been a regular in the Danish Superliga for most of the past four seasons. He arrived in Denmark at the age of 18 from FC Ebedei, a Nigerian club linked to FCM. He moved to the first team and made his breakthrough in the 2017-18 season.
“Frank was part of the FCM squad that won the Superliga in 2017-18, playing 15 games. He helped them win the title again in 2019/20 and the Danish Cup in 2019. Frank has played in the Champions League and Europa League for FCM, leaving Denmark after making 123 appearances and scoring 17 goals .
Brentford coach Thomas Frank called the player’s acquisition a solid one for his side.
“I can’t wait to have Frank in the building. We think he’s an important addition to the team, and we look forward to working with him. He’s a very dynamic player, ”Frank said on the same portal.
“Frank plays like an eight in our system, he’s very good at moving from square to square and will be invaluable to us when we don’t have the ball. He comes from the Danish league and was one of the best midfielders in that league; we believe it has the potential to develop further.
“All of the coaches here are eager to work with Frank and take him to the next level.”
Brentford co-director Rasmus Ankersen said: “Frank [Onyeka] is a player we know very well, for obvious reasons. Over the past two years he has emerged as the dominant midfielder in the Danish league and his performances in the Champions League last season have convinced us that he is ready for the Premier League.
“With his pace, power and ability to win the ball I’m sure Frank will be a great addition to the Brentford squad.”
Onyeka received his first call-up to play for Nigeria last season and was selected in the friendly against Algeria where he made his debut.
Brentford will face Arsenal in their league opener on August 13.
