Fabrizio Romano is one of the biggest names in football as a transfer insider, but he’s now trying his hand at Formula 1.
The Italian has 12.2m followers on Twitter as the source for all football news but has now broken Pierre Gasly’s switch from Alpha Tauri to Alpine.
The Frenchman has been part of the Red Bull team since joining F1 in 2017, moving from previously named Toro Rosso to Red Bull, and now back with Alpha Tauri.
Now, however, he is finally ready to say goodbye to the energy drink-backed brand, signing up for the French team Alpine run by car giants Renault.
The move has been widely rumored since Fernando Alonso announced his shock departure for Aston Martin and then Oscar Piastri said he would not drive for them next season, with race winner Gasly an obvious candidate for his partner Esteban Ocon.
The manner in which the news is announced is somewhat surprising, however, with Romano confirming it.
“Different Kinds of Here We Go Today!” he wrote. “For a few minutes I will be in Formula 1.
“I understand that Pierre Gasly will join BWT Alpine F1 Team from Alpha Tauri from the end of the season.
“The personal terms have all been signed and an official announcement is expected within the next few hours.”
Alpine responded to the news with a “thinking face” emoji, while Aston Martin had fun with a photo of drivers Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll surprised by a phone.
Gasly had already signed a one-year extension earlier in the year but is leaving an Alpha Tauri seat with Red Bull battling for the talent to fill it.
The Milton Keynes squad have five drivers in Formula 2 but, with none of them having made it to the mark so far, Dutchman Nyck de Vries appears to be the favorite after impressing hugely in a substitute performance with Williams at the Italian Grand Prix.
