Former Guantanamo detainee Saifullah Paracha repatriated to Pakistan

Saifullah Paracha, a former detainee at Guatanamo Bay detention center, has been repatriated to Pakistan, according to a Defense Ministry statement.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin previously notified Congress in September of his intention to repatriate Parasha, who has been detained in the United States since 2003 for his alleged links to al-Qaeda.

The Department of Defense statement said, “The United States appreciates the willingness of Pakistan and other partners to support ongoing U.S. efforts focused on responsible reduction of the detainee population and ultimately the closure of the Guantanamo Bay facility”.

A statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Paracha arrived in the country on Saturday, adding that the Foreign Ministry “has completed an extensive inter-agency process to facilitate the repatriation of Mr. Paracha”.

“We are happy that a Pakistani citizen detained overseas is finally reunited with his family,” the statement continued.

Thirty-five detainees remain at Guantamo Bay, the Pentagon said in its statement Saturday, adding that “20 are eligible for transfer; 3 are eligible for a periodic review committee; 9 are involved in the military commission process; and 3 detainees were sentenced by military commissions.
