It’s not even November yet, but Manchester United are already in danger of fully imploding their season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
After a busy summer in the transfer market, hopes were that Solskjaer’s side would be able to kick off a serious push for silverware this quarter.
Sadly, an early exit from the Carabao Cup and some poor Premier League results – like the 5-0 loss to Liverpool – have meant the club have a lot of work to do in the second half of the season.
The January transfer window could be the perfect opportunity for United to address some of their squad’s weaknesses, but which players could be targeted to help the club take the next step?
Here are five that the Red Devils might consider moving into the winter transfer market.
Matthijs de Ligt
The Juventus defender looks like a player who may soon join one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
De Ligt left Ajax for Juventus in 2019 for a whopping £ 67.5million after being considered Europe’s most prominent young defender.
However, with reports claiming the Italian giants are looking to scale him up in order to reduce their payroll, it means the race to sign him could be about to intensify.
United’s defense has been dismal at times this quarter and perhaps the addition of the 22-year-old would solidify their ranks both now and in the future.
With over 200 club appearances for Ajax and Juventus under his belt, there’s no doubt that De Ligt would have what it takes to meet the challenge of playing at Old Trafford.
The West Ham and England star is surely not far from a move to one of the biggest clubs in the country.
Rice has been linked with United and Chelsea in recent seasons as the Hammers seek to retain their current talisman.
However, given United’s problems, they may have to do everything to sign the player.
The Red Devils’ backbone has looked extremely suspicious in recent weeks and with the 22-year-old comfortable as both a center-back and a central midfielder, he could be the perfect complement for Solskjaer’s side as he ‘they are looking to close the gap on their title rivals.
A midfielder who may not yet be known in the Premier League, but who certainly attracts many admiring glances.
The AC Milan star has been a big hit at San Siro since joining Atalanta club in 2017, making 193 appearances and having 46 goals involved during that time.
The 24-year-old is now considering his options as he looks to take the next step in his career with enthusiastic United, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Signing a high-quality central midfielder must be a priority for United in the coming months and given that the player could be available for a reduced price in January at the end of his contract it could be a no-brainer. .
However, with such an interest in his services, it could be a tough business to do.
There are few players more in demand in the Premier League than Tielemans.
The Leicester man spent almost three years at King Power during which he built a reputation as one of the most technically gifted players in the elite.
However, with a contract expiring in just over 18 months, that means the Foxes are in a tough spot.
If Tielemans doesn’t sign a new deal, they stand to lose it for nothing – a situation United could really benefit from if they act quickly to try to secure a deal.
The Belgium international will have no shortage of suitors, but Solskjaer’s side really need quality in the central midfielder, so it might be in their best interests to be proactive.
You never know, do you?
Kane has been a huge talking point over the summer months with Manchester City linked with a move for the English skipper.
That switch never went off and as a result it could make United’s game.
Kane is a proven finisher but more than that he’s a leader who seems disillusioned with life at Tottenham as he seeks to challenge himself at the highest level.
Of course, there’s an argument that United don’t need another attacking player to try and fit into their squad, but if the opportunity arises to sign the 28-year-old I’m sure. that they would be tempted.
