A fire during Sunday destroyed 300 hectares of pine forest south of Nîmes, causing a large plume of smoke. The fire broke out around 3 p.m. in the town of Aubais (2,000 inhabitants), along departmental road 12, in the South-East.
Five planes and a water bomber helicopter are in action. Reinforcements of firefighters from neighboring departments are also expected to help the 300 firefighters already mobilized.

“Four firefighters are injured,” announced Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin. One of them, “seriously injured”, was evacuated to the Montpellier Hospital Center for burns. The other three, more slightly injured, were victims of a “heat stroke” following a reversal of the flames by the wind which partly destroyed their vehicle, specified Colonel Agrinier who coordinates the operations on the spot. .

The A9 motorway partially closed
Fueled by the Mistral and the Tramontane, whose gusts blow at 60 km / h on dry ground, the fire progresses from 2.5 to 3 kilometers per hour. As a security measure, the A9, which serves Spain in particular, has been closed in both directions to traffic for about ten kilometers between Lunel and Gallargues. “The fire does not affect the motorway, but a significant release of smoke presents a risk for traffic”, specifies Vinci who has implemented traffic management measures on the A9 and the A54.

Some preventive evacuations in Aubais neighborhoods were underway and a multipurpose room was opened in the village to accommodate these residents.
The Gard was placed on Saturday, for the first time this season, in “extreme danger” level for the risk of forest fire in the Gard Rhodanien area and will be on heat wave orange vigilance on Monday from noon.
