Aurélien Tchouameni opened the scoring early in the first half.
Kane equalized from the penalty spot but Olivier Giroud then restored France’s lead with an expert header.
But with six minutes remaining on the clock, England had the chance to equalise, again from a penalty.
This time Kane wasted his effort and sent his shot over the crossbar, sending England packing.
Maguire, who has been magnificent under Gareth Southgate in the last Three Lions, took to social media in an emotional message.
The Manchester United ace said: “Last night hurt me. Absolutely gutted.
“A special thank you to Gareth and to you amazing fans who have continued to believe in me.
“I love my country and I hope we have made you proud.”

And the fans are all saying the same thing: we love you.
One replied: “You are a legendary mate, keep your heads up you and the boys have done England and so many others proud.”
Another said, “I just love you.”
Maguire’s standout performance in an England shirt in Qatar comes after he was booed by Three Lions fans earlier this year ahead of the 3-0 win over Ivory Coast.
The defender didn’t have the best of luck at the United club and ended up out of Erik ten Hag’s squad.
Fans felt Maguire should have lost his place, but Southgate kept their faith in the defender who has NEVER drop it.
Maguire left England base Doha on Sunday alongside Jack Grealish and Phil Foden.
His first return game for United could come on December 21 against Burnley in the EFL Cup.
