Explosion in southern Pakistan kills 3 Chinese, their driver

KARACHI, Pakistan — An explosion destroyed a van inside a university campus in southern Pakistan on Tuesday, killing three Chinese nationals and their Pakistani driver, officials said.

The source of the explosion at the University of Karachi was not immediately known, university spokesman Mohammad Farooq said.

Karachi Police Chief Ghulam Nabi Memon said initial investigations suggested it might be a suicide bomber. He said CCTV footage from the site showed a person wearing a women’s burqa covering head to toe walking to the van, followed by an instant explosion.

Among the three Chinese dead were the director of the China-built Confucius Institute, which offers Chinese language courses for graduates, and two teachers. The fourth fatality was the Pakistani driver of the van, officials said.

Abdul Khaliq, a police official, said an investigation was underway. No one claimed responsibility for the explosion.

The Balochistan Liberation Army, a militant group from neighboring Balochistan province, has targeted Chinese nationals in attacks in the past.
