Tire pressure in winter

Flat tires can be dangerous to drive in any weather.

A common automotive myth is that flat tires give you better traction in snow – but that’s not true.

A properly inflated tire will have more grip on the road, prevent you from skidding and allow you to brake in time.

During the colder months, tires can lose pressure much faster.

You can find the correct pressure your tires should be inflated to in your manual or in the driver’s side door.

Don’t forget to check the tread as well – it should be a minimum of 1.6mm deep across three quarters of the tire width, and experts recommend 3mm to be on the safe side.

Having bald tires could land you a fine of £2,500 per tire – or £10,000 if all four tires fail to comply with the rules.

The RAC recommends checking your tires at least once a week during the winter.
