European Council Summit – POLITICO

EU leaders meet Thursday and Friday for a summit in Brussels with Ukraine’s bid to join the bloc high on the agenda.

The question is whether to officially name the EU candidate country, a crucial step on the long and complex road to full EU membership.

Kyiv has seen some positive signs in recent days that he could earn the coveted designation. Last week, three major EU powers – Germany, France and Italy – all approved candidate status for Ukraine, but with some additional conditions. The European Commission has also recommended a similar approach.

There will also be talks of granting Moldova and Georgia EU candidate status. Moldova is seen as more likely than Georgia to get the green light, having secured backing from the Commission and Germany, France and Italy.
