Still worried to see Europe 1 approaching CNews to become “an opinion radio”, the intersyndicale and the society of editors (SDR) of the station call for a rally on Wednesday in front of its premises to denounce “the growing influence” of billionaire Vincent Bolloré.
The teams of the Lagardère group station want “Europe 1 to remain a generalist radio station” and “not to become an opinion radio”, write this Monday the SDR and the intersyndicale (SNJ-CGT-CFTC-FO) in a statement.
They refuse to “be instrumentalized” or “to participate in an activism that fractures society”, and deplore the “bridges” already “thrown” between CNews and Europe 1, such as the joint program presented at the start of the school year by Laurence Ferrari .
“All those who consider that these values are essential to the quality of the democratic debate, and who are worried about Vincent Bolloré’s growing influence in the media”, are thus invited “to come and testify, by their presence, in front of Europe. 1, Wednesday June 30 ”at 10 am.
“The basic problem remains unresolved”
This meeting coincides with the general meeting of shareholders of Lagardère, which must endorse the transformation of the group into a public limited company and the end of the absolute control of its boss Arnaud Lagardère for the benefit of Vincent Bolloré, its first shareholder.
The five-day strike started on June 18 is over “but the mobilization does not stop”, warned the SDR and the inter-union at the end of the movement last week.
Unprecedented in its scale, it was launched to contest the dismissal of a journalist, against a background of growing concerns about the future of the station, called to get closer to CNews, the Canal information channel. +, a subsidiary of the Vivendi group controlled by Vincent Bolloré.
The strikers returned to work on Wednesday, with management pledging to negotiate a mechanism similar to a conscience clause to allow journalists who disagree with the station’s future editorial direction to leave with compensation.
But “the basic problem remains unresolved: the Lagardère group’s project is to link Europe 1 to CNews, a news channel, which has become, under the impetus of its owner Vincent Bolloré, an opportunist and touting opinion media”, had deplored the SDR and the inter-union, fearing a future similar to that of iTELE. Became CNews in 2017, iTELE had lost a hundred journalists out of 120 after a historic 31-day strike in 2016.
In an interview with Figaro, the CEO of CNews, Serge Nedjar, assured that his channel, sometimes accused of proximity to the far right, “does not roll for anyone, neither party nor politician”. “As for the excitement of the teams (from Europe 1), I experienced it when iTELE was transformed. These are difficult times. There are always fears and fantasies, ”he added. Stressing not to speak “on what is happening at Europe 1”, he recalled the existence “for ten years” of the “Grand Rendez-Vous”, a political program “joint to iTELE then CNews and Europe 1” which “is going very well ”.
