EU and BRICS launch key summits — RT World News

European countries and major non-Western economic powers discuss global challenges and expansion in separate meetings

Two major economic integration organizations – the European Union and the BRICS – are hosting key summits this week. Leaders of EU member states gather in Brussels on Thursday for a two-day meeting, while BRICS countries hold a virtual rally hosted by China on the same dates.

The situation in Ukraine and its application for membership of the Union is high on the agenda of the EU summit. European leaders will discuss economic crises around the world and how they are affecting the continent, as well as key foreign policy issues.

Meanwhile, Beijing will host the 14th BRICS Emerging Economies Summit this week, bringing together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Member States will draw up plans for closer economic, security and public health cooperation, and set targets for reviving the global economy in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Beijing, which holds the rotating BRICS presidency, has argued for expanding the group to include Argentina as a full member. The Latin American nation has expressed its desire to join the BRICS and will participate in the summit.

The virtual meeting of BRICS leaders will be the most high-profile international event for Russian President Vladimir Putin since he ordered an attack on Ukraine in February. While Western countries have sought to punish Moscow with economic sanctions, Russia has prioritized trade with countries like China and India to soften the impact of Western trade restrictions.
