England striker Joe Marler tests positive for Covid ahead of Australia shock

The RFU revealed that Marler recorded a positive lateral flow test on Monday, which has since been confirmed by a positive PCR test.

He will now self-isolate for 10 days, following government guidelines, which means he could be available for the last Autumn Nation Series game against South Africa.

The rest of the team took additional lateral flow tests, which all came back negative. Results of further PCR tests are awaited.

Marler came off the bench to replace Ellis Genge in Tonga’s rout on Saturday at Twickenham. England were also scared of Covid for this game, with captain Owen Farrell missing after testing positive.

However, further reexamination and testing allowed Farrell to join the group because he had been the victim of a false positive. He is available to face Australia this weekend, if selected.
