Dom Bess set to win his 11th Test cap when England face Sri Lanka in Galle

Dom Bess has been backed to ‘make his mark’ in England’s test series against Sri Lanka as he prepares to lead the spin attack for Joe Root’s side.

Spinner Bess is set to team up with former Somerset teammate Jack Leach when tourists nominate their camp for the first test in Galle, which begins Thursday, live on Sky Sports Cricket.

Although he already has 10 caps to his name, this will be the 23-year-old’s first taste of Test cricket on the subcontinent, with Galle’s surface set to spin – and Root sees it as the perfect opportunity for Bess to present his talent.

“I think it will be very useful to him, the fact that he has already had great home spinning conditions in the Somerset colors and that he also had some success (last winter) in Port Elizabeth, where he turned quite drastically, “said the England captain.

“We know he has the ability and the skills that, if he starts spinning fast enough, to take advantage of it. It’s just a really good opportunity for him to show what he can do under these conditions.

“Wherever you go in the world your role will change under different conditions and if you look at the best all-around package as a player you have to be able to live and understand that.

“He’s someone at the very start of his career and he’s still learning it. It’s exciting to see that he’s already done it.

“But under these conditions which could be more in his favor, he could potentially go on and really make his mark on this tour.”

With England not finalizing their XI until later on Wednesday, Root has indicated that the batting lineup is already settled – meaning Essex’s Dan Lawrence will make his test debut at Galle.

The 23-year-old, who has nearly 4,000 first-class races to his name, is set to beat at five, sandwiched between captain and goalkeeper Jos Buttler.

“I think he’s a very exciting young player,” Root added. “We’ve obviously seen what he can do in county cricket the last few years and in Lions cricket last winter he was really impressive.

“With his ability to absorb pressure but also to really put teams under pressure with a range of shots, he’s a confident young man. I’m very excited to see him step into his job when he gets the chance. “
