Emmanuel Macron on Thursday described as “shame” the remarks made at the UN by the Malian Prime Minister, who had denounced a “mid-flight abandonment” of France by referring to the end of the Barkhane military operation.

“I was shocked. These comments are unacceptable,” French President Emmanuel Macron reacted on Thursday, September 30, regarding the Malian Prime Minister’s speech to the UN. Sunday, the latter had qualified the end of Operation Barkhane, led by France in the Sahel, of “abandonment in full flight”, criticizing a “lack of consultation”.

“It is a shame and it dishonours what is not even a government” resulting from “two coups d’état”, declared the French head of state, who replied to RFI on the sidelines of the closing dinner of the Africa2020 Season at the Élysée.

“I know the Malians don’t think that,” said Emmanuel Macron. “We are demanding because we are committed, we want to fight against terrorism and for security,” he added. “We are here because the Malian state has requested it. Without France, Mali would be in the hands of terrorists,” he said.

“Let them do their job”

The French president said he expected the junta leaders “to honor their commitments: that in February, there will be elections, that they stop putting political opponents in prison, that they do their job, c ‘that is to say the return of the state, which they have not done for months “.

“We are going to continue development projects” in Mali alongside the international community. But “this work cannot be done if the leaders do not take their responsibilities”, he warned.

“It is not inevitable,” he continued, giving the example of Niger, a country neighboring Mali, where there is “a courageous president, President Bazoum, after another courageous president, the president. Issoufou, who are doing their best, are fighting for their people, education, health … They are doing an admirable job. “

Four million spectators for the Africa2020 Season

After visiting with his wife Brigitte the exhibition of the Ghanaian artist El Anatsui at the Conciergerie, Emmanuel Macron received for dinner the actors and partners of the Africa2020 Season, which ended Thursday. He congratulated himself on the success of this long event which, since December 2020, has gathered more than four million spectators in 1,500 artistic, scientific or economic events throughout France.

The event “allowed France to start recognizing the place of youth and African energy,” he said.

“Our relationship with Africa must go through youth and civil society”, he added while a France-Africa summit is to be held on October 8 in Montpellier, a summit “a little overturned” which will not bring together not heads of state but representatives of African civil society.

Africa2020 was proposed by Emmanuel Macron during his speech to African youth in Ouagadougou in 2017.
