Emma Raducanu was happy to reflect on a “huge” victory after tasting victory for the first time since her superb US Open success at the Transylvanian Open.

Raducanu, with her Romanian father in his dressing room, is playing what must look like a home tournament in Cluj, even behind closed doors, and she will have had a blast after coming back from behind to beat Polona Hercog 4-6 7-5 6 -1.

Raducanu ignored mistakes and growing frustration before leveling up in pivotal moments to defeat Slovenian Polona Hercog

It was only her second game since that incredible win in New York last month and she was finally able to end the anomaly of being a winless grand slam champion on the WTA Tour.

This is only Raducanu’s fourth tournament at this level and after three previous losses in the first round, she is finally on the board.

She said: “It looks like a huge win, it’s my first win on the WTA Tour that makes me very happy.

“It was tough for me, but I think winning my first WTA game means a lot because I was on a losing streak, so I had my first game. I’m really glad I was through it today. ‘hui.

“I think the key was to try to stay mentally calm,” she said.

“It really means a lot, it’s my first win, I knew it in my head, so I was fighting really hard to get on the board. To play in Romania, I had incredible support, so they really helped me.

“It’s too bad there aren’t any fans here, but I hope they were watching and just wanted to make them proud.”

The 18-year-old has been enjoying life off the pitch since her success at Flushing Meadows, with a slew of red carpet appearances and profitable supporters, but this victory will be a big step in the right direction.
