Rhys’ family said they gained strength from seeing how brave he was

A teenager with just months to live gets his “last wish” by helping raise money for a six-year-old who also has cancer.

Rhys Langford, 19, from Ebbw Vale, Blaenau Gwent, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in October 2020.

When he heard about Jacob, who also lives in the town, he donated £1,000 and raised over £28,000.

Rhys told his parents, “If there’s nothing for me to do, I want to try and help save this little boy. »

After completing treatment last summer, Rhys found out this month that his cancer had returned and spread dramatically, meaning he has just months to live.

She said: “For Rhys to think of a little boy like that, even though Rhys had to deal with his own terminal prognosis, it takes my breath away.

“Think about what he is doing and what he has achieved so far while lying in bed. »

Rhys rang Velindre Hospital in Cardiff to say he had completed treatment – before his cancer returned

Rhys, who was fit and active and enjoyed martial arts before he fell ill, is now bedridden.

The first sign that he was ill came in October 2020 when he was 18 and started complaining of leg pain.

After his diagnosis, he had months of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, followed by surgery.

In August 2021 he ‘ringed the bell’ at Velindre Hospital in Cardiff, meaning his treatment was over.

But in October he became ill again and was recently told he had months to live.

It was a devastating time for his parents and brother Charlie, nine, with dad Paul saying he can’t sleep at night.

Rhys’ mum says the family spent the first fortnight ‘mourning the life Rhys will never have’

Ms Langford said it “hurts to breathe”.

“It’s the unknown. But all of this (the fundraising) upset Rhys and kinda took his mind off it, I think.

“And seeing Rhys show courage and strength gives us courage and strength. »

Mr Langford said Rhys had been “overwhelmed” by the reaction, adding: “He is in tears on a regular basis. Especially when he hears the stories people leave and the messages.

“It’s his last wish – he says ‘if they can’t save me, maybe I can help save little Jacob and bring him back to life.’ »

Rhys hopes his donation can help Jacob, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2017

Jacob was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2017 and after treatment was found to be cancer free in 2019.

But last month her parents were told it was “very likely” that a new tumor on her liver was cancer and they are awaiting tests to confirm it.

Money raised by Rhys will go towards future treatment for Jacob, who may need to travel to America for experimental treatment not available on the NHS.
