Donald Trump: I would love to be mayor of New York

Donald Trump joked that he “would love” to run for mayor of New York on the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Mr. Trump was answering questions on Saturday during a meeting with a group of New York City police officers and firefighters to commemorate the attacks on the World Trade Center.

“If you decide not to run for president, if you decide not to, would you consider running for mayor of New York? Mr. Trump was asked.

“Well, that’s an interesting question,” he replied mockingly, amid the laughter. “I wish that. We could straighten it out,” he added.

“I would say, ‘Guys, good luck, go to town.’ They would announce in a week: “There is no crime in this city”.

Current New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has faced low approval ratings and is unlikely to run again in November for term restrictions.

Although he has not made an official announcement, Mr. Trump has left the door open to his 2024 presidential run through crowdfunding and rallies. Mr. Trump’s team had more than $ 100 million on hand, with more than $ 82 million raised in the past six months.

He received a positive response when asked if he would run for president again.

“Oh, that’s a tough question,” Mr. Trump said.

“Actually, for me, it’s an easy question. I know what I’m gonna do. But, we’re not supposed to be talking about it yet from a campaign finance law perspective, which is downright ridiculous if you want to know the truth. But we have to live with it. But I think you are going to be happy, ”he added.

Several of Mr. Trump’s allies, including Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, had previously hinted that he would stand for re-election in 2024.

Formerly from New York, Mr Trump moved to Florida, where he now lives in Palm Beach at his resort town of Mar-a-Lago with his wife Melania and son Barron, 15.

In a pre-recorded statement released on Saturday at the National Mall in Washington DC, he said: “As a longtime New Yorker, it was extraordinary to see the strength and resilience of the people of this incredible city and it is in indeed an incredible city. “
