DLSS 3 mod for Starfield has a controversial DRM paywall

star field isn’t even officially available in Early Access yet, but one of its mods has already caused some controversy in the community. The mod in question adds support for Nvidia’s DLSS 3 upscaling technology, which Bethesda failed to include in star field in favor of AMD’s rival, FSR 2. But users criticized modder PureDark’s decision to lock DLSS 3’s more advanced framing features behind a subscription to their Patreon. The free version of the mod only supports DLSS 2, which offers scaling but not frame generation.

PureDark’s decision to add DRM to DLSS 3 was particularly controversial. star field mod in an effort to prevent non-Patreon subscribers from accessing it, however RockPaperShotgun reports that this copy protection seems to have already been hacked. DLSS 3 stands out for generating frames on the new Nvidia 40-series GPUs, adding additional frames in addition to upscaling the game to a higher resolution.

For what it’s worth, the non-paying DLSS 2 mod would work fine. RockPaperShotgun’s benchmarks show it matches or even slightly exceeds the performance of the game’s official AMD FSR 2 media, with slightly better image quality to boot. As of this writing, PureDarks’ “Starfield Upscaler” DLSS mod is the most popular build on NexusMods for star field.
