Democrats urge House Republican leaders to hold floor vote on assault weapons ban

The 2023 Assault Weapons Ban, introduced by Democrats in January, would ban the sale and import of 205 “military-style assault weapons” but allow owners to keep existing firearms. The bill would also ban certain magazines and “bump-fire” stocks, as well as expand background checks.

“Once again, our country was rocked yesterday when a gunman entered a Nashville elementary school and murdered three nine-year-old children and three staff members,” the letter read Tuesday. “Last July, the Judiciary Committee marked a ban on assault weapons and the bill passed the House with bipartisan support. We need to take the same action this Congress and quickly bring the ban on weapons storming to the markup and to the floor of the Chamber for a vote.”

There have already been 129 mass shootings in the United States this year, the letter says.
