DC’s dad battles alleged gunman with daughter in car

The father said a parental instinct kicked in and there was no way he was giving the gunman the keys.

WASHINGTON — A DC father said he fought off a gunman who tried to steal his car while his daughter was in the back seat. The man asked WUSA9 to conceal his identity.

He said the carjacking happened in the alley behind his southeast DC home after he pulled his car into the garage, with his young daughter in the backseat. It was then that he said a man had come with a gun.

“He said it was a carjacking, give me your keys,” the father said. “He hit me in the side of the head, threw me to the ground and started hitting me.”

He said the man with a gun asked him if he wanted to die today by pointing a gun at him.

“It was terrifying. Your parental instincts come into play. I had no intention of giving him the keys. I was trying to calculate the gun if I could deter him if I could land.

Ultimately, he said he used his martial arts training to fight back after being hit in the face with the gun.

“I started giving it back to him and he backed out,” the father said. “In my mind, I knew he really would have to kill me to get the keys because I wasn’t going to let him do anything with my daughter. It wasn’t happening.”

He said police responded shortly after fighting off the suspect and he fled down the driveway.

A Metropolitan Police Department report shows police responded to the home shortly before 1pm on Wednesday.

Police said it was an active investigation.
