Danish police launch large-scale manhunt after fatal shopping mall shooting – Reuters

Several people were killed and injured in a shootout at a Copenhagen shopping mall, police say

Large police forces have been deployed in the Danish capital of Copenhagen and across the island of Zeeland following a shooting that saw a gunman open fire in a Copenhagen shopping center on Sunday, the police said. Danish police. The suspect was arrested but law enforcement is unsure if he acted alone.

“Several” people were killed in the shooting, police spokesman Soren Thomassen confirmed at a news conference on Sunday, adding that there were also people injured in the incident. He did not give exact figures. Officers are still securing the scene and taking CCTV camera footage of the mall, local media reported.

Copenhagen Mayor Sophie Andersen called the situation “very serious” in a post on Twitter, but said she also had no information on the exact number of victims. According to Danish broadcaster DR, at least three people were sent to hospital following the attack.

The suspect, who was arrested just outside the mall, has been identified as a “Ethnic Danes”, 22. The police did not reveal his name or comment on the weapon he used. Videos posted on social media showed people desperately trying to flee the Field’s shopping center located not far from the city’s airport. Footage also showed a man dressed in black, who appeared to be carrying what looked like a long gun. RT could not independently verify the authenticity of the video.

Large police forces have been deployed to the scene as well as throughout Copenhagen and several other locations across Zeeland, Thomassen said, adding that a large-scale operation “manhunt” is still on the way. He also summoned witnesses and people from the attack, who would see “anything suspicious” to contact the police.

“It’s a massive operation. And it’s not just in Copenhagen, it’s all of Zeeland,” said the police spokesman. “We have to be absolutely sure that we have this situation under control. And until we are safe, we will act at the highest operational level,” he added.

The suspect’s motives remain unclear, police said. Still, investigators are not ruling out the possibility that the attack could have been a terrorist act. “We are investigating this as an incident in which we cannot rule out terrorism,” said Thomassen.

Police did not say whether the suspect was previously known to law enforcement.

The attack took place about a week after a gunman opened fire outside a gay bar in Oslo, neighboring Norway. There, police said they treated the incident as a terror attack and raised the nationwide terror threat to “extraordinary” following the incident.
