A fierce debate has been sparked in France after a health boss suggested the unvaccinated could be charged for their treatment

Speaking live on French television on Wednesday, the head of the Paris AP-HP hospital system, Martin Hirsch, wondered whether people who refused the Covid-19 vaccine should benefit from free treatment.

“When free and effective drugs are available, should people be able to give them up without consequences…as we struggle to care for other patients?said Hirsch.

In France, as in most European countries, all citizens have the right to universal health care. However, Covid-19 patients who end up in intensive care cost an average of €3,000 ($3,340) per day. Typically, a patient will stay in an intensive care unit for seven to 10 days.

The hospital boss said he was raising the issue because of skyrocketing healthcare costs and claimed the irresponsible behavior of some should not put others at risk of not receiving life-saving treatment .

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo — who chairs the AP-HP board and is a socialist presidential candidate — was among those who disagreed with Hirsch. Others, including the deputy of La France Insoumise (LFI), Danièle Obono, called for his dismissal.

Olga Givernet, MP for President Emmanuel Macron’s LREM party, told BFMTV on Thursday that “The question raised by the medical community could not be ignored.”

Health Minister Olivier Veran has yet to comment.

There are currently more than 30,000 people hospitalized with Covid-19 in France, and some 3,694 in intensive care, down from last week.

The pressure impacts the normal functioning of the French health system.
