Conservatives promise new parents on leave could earn up to $ 1,000 without losing EI benefits

OTTAWA – Federal Conservatives promise to let new parents earn up to $ 1,000 a month without affecting their maternity or parental leave payments.

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole made the announcement today in Ottawa during the final week of the federal election.

O’Toole says federal maternity and parental benefits allow parents to receive up to 55 percent of their earnings – up to a maximum of $ 595 per week – but he says many low-income people cannot. not afford the reduced salary.

He says new parents could supplement those EI payments with additional income from remote or part-time work.

Parents could earn up to $ 1,000 a month without affecting their payments, after which every dollar earned would result in a 50-cent reduction in EI benefits.

O’Toole also promises to expand the Canada Child Benefit to begin in the seventh month of pregnancy rather than giving birth.
