College basketball mourns the loss of a rising star.
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Department of Athletics tweeted than the guard of the Warhawks Derek Gray “passed away suddenly on July 24, 2022, while playing the game he loved.”
The athlete’s cause of death has not been made public. However, the UW-Whitewater men’s basketball coach Pat Miller told WKOW in Madison, Wis., that Derek collapsed during an on-campus kids’ basketball camp. He said rescuers arrived quickly and around 100 campers were escorted out of the facility unaware of the player’s worsening condition.
“It was just a very surreal situation where you’re thinking, ‘Okay, he’s going to be fine,'” Miller said, “and then you’re very scared and the longer it went on, it became apparent that it was extraordinarily serious.”
Derek is survived by his parents, Traci Pin and Donneil Graytwin brothers David Grayand an older brother, Donneil Gray Junior.
