WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States is frustrated that Moscow has not provided a meaningful response to its proposed prisoner exchange, CNN reported Thursday, citing U.S. officials.
The proposal was reportedly made in June, but Washington has received no substantive response so far.
CNN reported Wednesday that the Biden administration is offering to trade Russian citizen Viktor Bout for Americans Paul Whelan and Brittney Griner. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken later said that the United States had made a substantial offer to Moscow to facilitate the release of the two US citizens, adding that the two governments had communicated repeatedly and directly about this proposal.
The United States would have proposed an exchange of prisoners in Moscow: the Russian Viktor Bout against the Americans Griner and Whelan
Earlier Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there was no agreement between Russia and the United States on a possible prisoner swap.
On February 17, basketball player Griner was arrested at a Moscow airport for carrying cannabis oil in her luggage. If found guilty, the athlete faces a prison term of up to 10 years. Griner pleaded guilty but insisted she had no intention of committing a crime and was packing her bags in a hurry.
Whelan is serving his prison sentence in the Russian region of Mordovia after a Moscow court sentenced him in June 2020 to 16 years for espionage. He denied the charges but did not contest the verdict in hopes of being part of a possible prisoner swap between the United States and Russia.
The charges against Whelan were not disclosed, but a press release from Russia’s Federal Security Service said he was arrested in Moscow in late 2018 during a counterintelligence operation.
