The Town of Columbus, Ohio, attained a $10 million settlement with the family of Andre Hill, a Black person who was fatally shot by a now-previous law enforcement officer as he walked out of the garage of a household, officers announced Friday.
The settlement, the maximum such volume ever compensated by the city, will go to the Columbus Metropolis Council for a vote on Monday.
“We recognize that because of this former officer’s steps, the Hill loved ones will never be whole,” Town Lawyer Zach Klein reported in a statement. “No quantity of income will ever provide Andre Hill again to his family members, but we imagine this is an significant and essential move in the correct course.”
In addition to the settlement, he said that a gymnasium at the Brentnell Neighborhood Center will be renamed soon after Hill.
Hill, 47, was fatally shot Dec. 22 by former Officer Adam Coy after Coy and a 2nd officer responded to a contact that a man or woman in a motor vehicle retained turning the engine on and off.
