BEIJING (Sputnik) – China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is holding military drills Saturday with a shooting exercise in the country’s southeast Fujian province across the Taiwan Strait, the Pingtan County Maritime Safety Administration announced.
The authority issued a warning that military live-fire drills will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. local time (00:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. GMT) and the designated sea area will be closed to the entry of all vessels.
Meanwhile, the Chinese military has also been holding drills since Friday in the western part of the Hainan Strait, which separates Guangdong Province from Hainan Island as well as near an island south of Guangdong.
The military drills come ahead of the 95th anniversary of the PLA’s founding as well as a possible visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, which Beijing finds objectionable.
Earlier this month, media reported Pelosi was due to visit Taiwan in August, prompting a backlash from Beijing. China’s Foreign Ministry said that in the event of Pelosi’s visit, Beijing will take decisive action to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the United States will bear full responsibility for any consequences resulting from the visit.
