China asks EU to examine ‘root causes’ of Ukraine conflict — RT World News

Beijing’s special envoy meets with German officials and reiterates China’s calls for a peaceful solution to the current crisis
European countries should focus on finding and resolving “root causes” which has led to the current crisis in Ukraine, Chinese Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui told German Federal State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Andreas Michaelis during a meeting in Berlin on Wednesday.
Li said Beijing’s stance on the Ukraine issue remained unchanged and focused on promoting peace talks and a political settlement of the conflict, according to a statement released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Recalling the words of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Li said that “There is no panacea to resolve the crisis” and that all parties should create favorable conditions for the resumption of peace talks through the accumulation of mutual trust.
“China helps European countries to start from the root causes of the crisis and find solutions to both symptoms and root causes, and make efforts for the long-term stability of the European continent,” Li said, adding that Beijing is willing to maintain close communication with Germany on this issue.
According to the statement, Michaelis said the German side greatly appreciates China’s positive efforts to defuse the Ukrainian crisis and noted that it is “useful and necessary” for the two countries to strengthen dialogue on a number of major international and regional issues, including the situation in Ukraine.
Li and Michalis’ meeting comes as the Chinese special representative is on a week-long tour of Europe with the aim of encouraging a political settlement for Ukraine and promoting China’s 12-point roadmap to achieving to peace in the region.
The envoy has already met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, the Polish Deputy Foreign Minister and officials from the French Foreign Ministry. He is expected to conclude the tour with a visit to Moscow on Friday.
China’s peace efforts have been praised by Russia and several other nations, with Russian President Vladimir Putin saying many points in Beijing’s plan are “granted” with the position of Moscow.
However, most Western powers rejected China’s roadmap, saying it lacked “credibility” amid Beijing’s refusal to join the West’s anti-Russian sanctions campaign. The EU’s foreign policy chief also called China’s plan “wishful thinking” and insisted that the only solution worth considering is that proposed by Kyiv, which includes a full withdrawal of Russian forces and an international tribunal.
