CHICAGO (WLS) – A Chicago police officer and a suspect were both injured in a shootout in the Calumet Heights neighborhood on Wednesday night, police said.

Officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle around 8:30 p.m. near 92nd Street and Stony Island Avenue. Two people were inside the vehicle which they stopped. During the investigation, there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspected suspects and the officers, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said.

“A traffic investigation is the way we characterize it, which is a little different from a traffic stop and the further investigation by officers led to an exchange of gunfire,” the official said. Superintendent Brown.

One of the Chicago cops was shot in the leg and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. Police said the officer’s injuries were not life threatening.
