Chelsea set to record lowest ever Premier League points tally as bad records keep coming

The Blues performed a guard of honor for Pep Guardiola’s champions then watched them lift the Premier League trophy at the Etihad Stadium.
Julian Alvarez scored the game’s only goal for the second side in the chain to confirm Chelsea’s lowest ebb.
Frank Lampard’s side will now only be able to claim a maximum of 47 points, below the record 50 points set in the 1995-96 and 2015-16 seasons.
They will also need to score more than 10 goals in their last two games, away to Manchester United and at home to Newcastle, to avoid their lowest goal tally in the Premier League era.
Chelsea’s starting line-up scored just 23 on-field goals at the Etihad Stadium despite their strongest side against Man City, who made nine changes and still had 27 on-field goals.
Their 36 league goals are exactly the same as Erling Haaland’s league figure this season.
Lampard had already overseen his side’s record number of defeats in a single season and must win their last two matches to avoid a record number of wins as well.
Chelsea will also likely finish furthest behind the Premier League-era champions, with the gap currently standing at 45 points.
Man City also picked up their fourth consecutive win over Chelsea for the first time in either club’s history.
This only underlines the amount of work Mauricio Pochettino has to do when he is finally appointed.
Although the Blues had chances to equalize, including a Conor Gallagher header that hit the post, their struggles against a second-string eleven only underscores the feeling that they are desperate for this season to end.
And all of this from a club that have spent £600million over the past two transfer windows. Pochettino offers a fresh start and hopes this season’s stench doesn’t last too long.
