Chelsea news: Thomas Tuchel warns trophy hopes could be dashed without transfers

The German is prioritizing Ben Chilwell’s cover at left-back, but could also seek extra depth on the right after Reece James’ hamstring injury.

With Chilwell being ruled out for the season after an anterior cruciate ligament surgery, they are working on a deal with Lyon to bring Emerson Palmieri back from loan, while Everton’s Lucas Digne is also under consideration.

With the left of the defense a priority, Tuchel believes losing James until next month could prove extremely damaging to his hopes of winning major silverware in his first full season at Stamford Bridge.

While the Premier League title now seems out of reach, after an alarming drop in December, Chelsea are still competing on all other fronts, including the Club World Cup.

Tuchel said: “If you’re out for a few weeks and you don’t know how fast the comeback process is, you can lose a lot of games. If you have the wrong timing you can lose Club World Cup matches, you can lose Champions League matches, you can lose crucial Carabao Cup matches and league matches.

“It’s like that and if you’re out for four or five weeks you can lose 10 or 12 games. It may be too much.

Chelsea are currently in talks with Lyon over the possibility of bringing Emerson back, with Tuchel preferring to work with someone he knows will fit right into his squad.

He said: “Of course we know him and we appreciate him as a player and as a person. He was a huge influence, although he didn’t have a lot of minutes last season.

“He’s a top-level guy, a top-level professional and he’s still a Chelsea player. But that’s not only what I want, you have to assess the situation as well. We are going to study that on this position. , that’s one of the options.

Tuchel had not planned to apply for funds in January as he was happy with the depth of his squad.

But the spike in Covid cases, which has now ruled out N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva, as well as Chilwell and James’ injuries, has prompted rethinking.

Chelsea have faced numerous injuries from key players before, with Kante, Romelu Lukaku, Mateo Kovacic, Timo Werner, Mason Mount and Kai Havertz all spending long periods out of action.

Now Tuchel believes his side need to get stronger midway through the campaign.

He said, “If you lose options, you lose options and you lose options not just in personnel, but in tactics and training.

“We are checking our options and in the end it has to make sense. It’s not just pure numbers to bring in players. It has to be a good mix of high quality attitude and character. Then it must be possible.

“It looks like everyone would love to have it. If we had a full team, I’d like to answer that question and say we don’t need anything. But we have the problem and that is why we are looking at it.

“We are discussing and negotiating, of course, with the staff, the board and scouting, checking out the possibilities as we always would.

“But given that we have long term injuries, we are looking at the market, we are looking at some possibilities, not under the highest pressure. And things have to make sense to us in terms of personality, positioning and also of quality.

“So we have all the options and we are going to check them out. “
