Chelsea news: Thomas Tuchel confirms that N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva have tested positive for Covid

Chelsea pair Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante have become the latest Blues players to test positive for Covid, ahead of tonight’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Tottenham.

The Blues were hit hard by positive cases in their squad over the holiday season and remained furious when the Premier League rejected their request to postpone last month’s meeting with Wolves.

The latest positive tests deprive Tuchel of two of his most important players for the Spurs meeting at Stamford Bridge.

“It’s huge for us because they are two huge players,” said the German. “We had the latest information today in the morning, so it’s quite difficult, but we’re going to push. The guys here have our confidence and our conviction.

“We will push things to the maximum. The situation has not changed for a few weeks, this is not the time to repeat it, from there we are looking for solutions. I have confidence in the guys who are playing and I hope we have a strong performance.

Silva’s positive test comes just days after the Brazilian signed a contract extension to keep him at the club next season.

The duo’s absence was part of six changes to Tuchel’s roster on the side that started the 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Sunday, with Romelu Lukaku brought straight back to the roster after being abandoned for that game.
