Saul won titles in Spain and played Champions League and Europa League football

It looked like a deal was in doubt when the 11pm deadline passed without announcement, but the documents were submitted on time.

After entering Atleti’s first team at the age of 17, Saul made more than 300 appearances for the club and won the La Liga title twice.

Despite appearing in two Champions League finals, the midfielder has yet to lift the prestigious trophy – which currently resides in west London.

Having completed the signing of Rodrigo de Paul, Diego Simeone apparently saw the midfielder as surplus to requirements and was dropped at the top of the bench for the 2-2 draw with Villareal this weekend.

TalkSPORT Spanish football expert Kevin Hatchard has described what Saul would bring to Stamford Bridge and he believes he is exactly what the Blues need.

“I think Chelsea are becoming a great player. They get someone with a lot of experience.

“Someone is just a title, La Liga, and has played a lot of great Champions League games.

“He’s versatile and a real tiger in it – really tenacious.

“I think he’s really perfect for Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea”

Having already signed Romelu Lukaku, Thomas Tuchel hoped to add Jules Kounde to his defensive ranks after letting Kurt Zouma join West Ham United.

Still, Sevilla have reportedly blocked a move for the France international and sporting director Monchi has backed the club’s position.

Kounde seems very unlikely to join the Blues at this late stage

Kounde, who joined La Liga in 2019, made 91 appearances for Sevilla and caught the attention of many big European clubs.

“There has been a lot of talk about the moves made for Jules, the majority of which have been rejected by the player,” said Monchi.

“If there was one club he liked the look of, it was Chelsea.”
