CANNES, France — The Cannes Film Festival always arouses a certain admiration.
Appearances by cinema royalty, the nightly parade of haute couture and the festival’s ability to launch filmmakers and films big and small on the world stage combine to produce an array of eye-catching moments during the 12 days of Cannes.
As the festival draws to a close on Saturday, see some of its most defining moments through the lens of Associated Press photographers.
From its first day, the 76th edition demonstrated its ability to attract attention by welcoming Johnny Depp’s return to the cinema with the opening film, “Jeanne du Barry”.
While some were angered by the focus on Depp — who told the AP ‘I didn’t know what planet I was on’ during his premiere appearance — the festival quickly shone the spotlight on other stars.
Michael Douglas received an honorary Palme d’or and kisses from his wife and daughter at the top of the famous stairs of the Palais du Festival. Harrison Ford, who made his final film debut as Indiana Jones, also accepted an honorary award, choking back tears after a career highlight film aired.
Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio reunited on the red carpet at the premiere of “Killers of the Flower Moon,” one of the festival’s highest-profile entries and a return of Scorsese to the movie fest of the Riviera. Wes Anderson also returned, this time joined by Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson and the many stars of his ‘Asteroid City’ film.
Six days after her father’s premiere, Lily-Rose Depp launched her own controversial project, the HBO series “The Idol.” Young Depp and his co-star The Weeknd shone on the red carpet and smiled and laughed together as the photographers walked away.
The festival operates at its own precise pace, with daytime press conferences and photocalls. The French Riviera often serves as a whimsical backdrop, like when actor Tom Mercer did a handstand for photographers or “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate” actor Ethann Isidore jumped off a podium.
Still, the biggest attention-grabbers remain the flashy premieres, where fans flock for even fleeting glimpses of their heroes. Cannes is where the stars playfully interact with the cameras and, when the films stop, the awards predictions begin as the applause helps carry the films to screens around the world.
