CAN top scorers: Vincent Aboubakar tops the Golden Shoe in Cameroon
T

he Africa Cup of Nations is finally upon us after many frustrating delays caused by climate concerns and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

24 teams are playing for glory in Cameroon, with Riyad Mahrez, Said Benrahma and Algeria trying to successfully defend the title they won with victory over Senegal in Cairo two and a half years ago.

However, the formidable Fennec Foxes – on an incredible 39-game unbeaten streak – won’t be short of challengers for their crown, with Egypt’s Mohamed Salah hoping to make it a record eighth continental triumph, although their defeat in the first day against Nigeria was disappointing.

His Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane leads the charge for Africa’s top-ranked side and favorites Senegal, while Vincent Aboubakar got off to a good start with four goals for Cameroon, who won the AFCON for the last time in 2017.

Nigeria looked short of firepower without Emmanuel Dennis, Victor Osimhen and 2019 top scorer Odion Ighalo, although with Kelechi Iheanacho up front there don’t seem to be too many problems, while Wilfried Zaha and Sebastien Haller pave the way for Côte d’Ivoire.

Brothers Jordan and Andre Ayew are still the ones to watch for Ghana, with Morocco’s firepower coming from Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri and Ayoub El Kaabi.

Gabon are led by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has been frozen out at Arsenal since being relieved of the captaincy last month, despite missing his country’s opener after testing positive at the Covid.
