Cam Thomas close to return from ankle injury as Nets get healthier

For the first time in three weeks, Nets guard Cam Thomas has a chance to play, however small.

Thomas is listed as doubtful for Tuesday’s NBA In-Season Tournament against Toronto due to a sprained left ankle.

Brooklyn’s leading scorer hasn’t played since Nov. 8, missing the last eight games.

Last week, the Nets and coach Jacque Vaughn expressed hope that Thomas could return to team activities this week.

Without official training on the calendar, it will be difficult to find opportunities.

Still, the updated injury list bodes well for Brooklyn.

Thomas’ team-leading 26.9 points would be ninth in the league if he qualifies, and his offensive punch will be a welcome addition whenever he returns.

Starting power forward Cam Johnson was forced to withdraw from Sunday’s win over Chicago due to right leg cramps, the second game he has left early this season because of it.

Cam Thomas is close to returning from an ankle injury. P.A.

He is listed as probable.

Nic Claxton is questionable with a sprained left ankle that kept him sidelined against the Bulls.

The starting center could return after missing just one game.

It’s a welcome development after Claxton missed eight straight games this season due to a sprained ankle suffered on opening night.

“He kind of twisted his ankle again,” Vaughn said. “It is the same.”

That recurrence occurred with 1:09 left in the first quarter Saturday against Miami.

He finally returned in the second quarter and finished the game with 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks.

“Yeah, I mean, JV has been preaching depth from the beginning. We have a group of guys. You know, we always released CT (Thomas). Cam (Johnson) left the game pretty early,” Spencer Dinwiddie said. “But overall… we have a group of guys that can really play well and make an impact. And we can’t wait to be healthy again.

The Nets are getting closer little by little.

Backup point guard Dennis Smith Jr. was upgraded to questionable due to a lower back sprain after missing the last four games.

Ben Simmons is still out due to a nerve impingement in his left lower back.

The Nets enter Tuesday’s game 8-8 after playing one of the toughest schedules in the league and a combined 34 missed games from Claxton, Johnson, Simmons and Thomas.

Gradey Dick (G-League), Javon Freeman-Liberty (G-League), Ron Harper Jr. (G-League), Christian Koloko (injury/illness – respiratory issue) and Markquis Nowell (G-League) were all tried . on the way to Toronto.
