California rocked by back-to-back deadly shootings — RT World News

Seven people were killed at two separate sites in the town of Half Moon Bay, police say

Seven people were killed Monday in a mass shooting in the town of Half Moon Bay in California, police confirmed. The bloodshed comes just two days after a gunman shot and killed 11 people during a Lunar New Year celebration in the Los Angeles area.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said he was visiting victims of the Monterey Park attack on Saturday at the hospital when he learned another shooting had taken place, this time in the northern part of the state. It was “tragedy upon tragedy” Newsom wrote on Twitter.

The attack in Half Moon Bay, about 48 km (30 miles) south of San Francisco, took place at two nearby farming businesses.

Four people were shot and one was seriously injured at a mushroom farm, while three other bodies were later discovered at a dirt farm, about a mile away. All of the victims were Chinese-American workers, according to police.

The suspected shooter has been identified as Chunli Zhao, a 67-year-old resident of Half Moon Bay. Chunli was arrested after he was found sitting in his car outside the sheriff’s station, with authorities suggesting he drove there to surrender. US news channels broadcast footage of officers pinning the man to the ground.

“This kind of shooting is horrible” San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus told reporters. According to Corpus, a semi-automatic handgun was discovered inside Chunli’s vehicle. The suspect wasfully cooperating” with investigators, she added. However, the motives for the deadly attack remain unclear for the time being.

The shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay were both carried out by Asian men of retirement age. The shooter, who attacked people at a dance studio in a Los Angeles suburb on Saturday, has been identified as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran. He committed suicide as the police tried to arrest him.
