Akamai Technologies, a content delivery company, apologized after a software update to its services caused several websites to crash.
Sites such as Barclays, HSBC, British Airways and Airbnb were affected, but service was restored soon after.
In apologies, Akamai said, “At 3:46 pm UTC today, a software configuration update triggered a bug in DNS, the system that directs browsers to websites. This caused an interruption affecting the availability of some customer websites.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused. We are reviewing our software update process to avoid future interruptions. (3/3)

“The interruption lasted up to an hour. After canceling the software configuration update, the services resumed normal operations. Akamai can confirm that this was not a cyberattack against the Akamai platform.
“We apologize for the inconvenience caused. We are reviewing our software update process to avoid future interruptions.”
During the outage, a message on BA’s website read: “Service Unavailable – DNS Failed. The server is temporarily unable to respond to your request. Please try again later.
And a post on the Airbnb site said, “This site cannot be reached.”
HSBC’s website had a similar message.
It has been reported that other airlines and large businesses are also affected, as well as the 911 service on the east coast of the United States.
Edge DNS is a content delivery network (CDN), providing a service similar to Cloudflare, Amazon CloudFront, or Fastly.
CDNs speed the Internet by keeping copies of website data in various locations around the world, so computers don’t have to wait long periods of time to communicate with sites halfway around the world.
Last month, much of the internet went down when CDN Fastly started having problems.
US company Fastly said the June 8 problems were due to an “undiscovered software bug” in its system that was triggered by a single anonymous customer who updated their settings.
