Buffalo, New York, police say at least 10 people are dead and one suspect is in custody after a man armed with a rifle and body armor opened fire on a city supermarket.

Police said the shooting took place in Tops in the 1200 block of Jefferson Avenue.

It was not immediately known how many people had been affected or the severity of their injuries.

Investigators are investigating whether the alleged gunman broadcast the massacre live and posted a white supremacist manifesto online.

A witness told CNN the shooter was wearing army fatigues and a bulletproof vest. The eyewitness said the man, whom he described as white, held a gun to his chin before putting it on the ground and surrendering to officers.
