A British doctor was killed by a stray bullet to the head while lying in bed while traveling in the US state of Georgia.

Matthew Willson, 31, appears to have been shot indiscriminately after a weapon was “recklessly discharged” into a nearby apartment building, according to Brookhaven police.

He is from Chertsey, Surrey, and was visiting relatives in the town.

Officers said they received multiple emergency calls around 2 a.m. local time about multiple shots fired from an apartment complex in the 3600 block of Buford Hwy in Brookhaven, a town near Atlanta.

While checking the area they were called about the shooting of Dr. Willson at a nearby apartment – the 3100 block of Clairmont Rd.

They soon found him lying in bed with a single bullet to his head.

He was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

“This incident appears to be a random act involving individuals participating in the reckless discharge of firearms that led to the tragic death of Dr. Willson,” police said.

Officers have asked for the public’s help in finding those responsible.

Tips leading to arrests could receive a cash reward through Crime Stoppers Atlanta.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: ‘We are supporting the family of a Briton following his death in the US and are in contact with the US authorities.
