Danny Murphy believes Erik ten Hag should name one of his new signings as Manchester United captain for the new season.

Ten Hag has an important job at Old Trafford and needs to work immediately
United will have ambitions of a top-four finish next season and to do so they are likely to strengthen their squad as they seek to improve on their sixth-place finish last term.
Along with changing the way the team plays, ten Hag will be tasked with selecting a club captain who shares his methods and has the clout to bridge the gap between the management team and the playing team.
Harry Maguire is currently skipper, while Cristiano Ronaldo has also been linked with the role, but according to former Liverpool man Danny Murphy, ten Hag could be better served by bringing in a new face to take on the responsibility.
He told White and Jordan: “I don’t think it should be set in stone, but on this particular occasion it’s a very important decision for Manchester United and one that shouldn’t be taken at the ready. light.
“I certainly don’t think that’s the one that should be left to the players.
“What you could do is leave things as they are to give yourself time to make the right decision.

Maguire’s position as captain could be in doubt next season
“My feeling is that sometimes the best thing for a new manager to do is give the captaincy to a player he knows and trusts.”
When asked if former Ajax star Ten Hag Donny Van de Beek could be a candidate, Murphy pointed out: “Someone he brings in from outside. He’s already there and he hasn’t played enough, so that would be a bit far-fetched, but if you call in a leader and you go boom, you’re also the captain, so you’re kind of together.
Darren Bent was also discussing the captaincy dilemma with Andy Goldstein on talkSPORT Drive last week and suggested the club’s number one stopper might actually be the best man for the job.
Bent said: “I think David De Gea should be the captain.

Darren Bent suggested De Gea could be a good option for the role
“My only thing with Ronaldo is that we know he is a leader, but he tried to lead this season and few players followed him. Some of them went the other way.
“None of them got better, none wanted to follow the example he set and we know he’s one of the greats, but there were times when people just wouldn’t pass on to him. not the ball and he had his back to them and throws his arms in the air.
“He’s not a captain.
“He was captain this season without having the armband, but for me David De Gea would be my captain.”
