Tiwari was arrested in Noida in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday by a West Bengal Police squad.
After being brought to Asansol on Sunday, Tiwari was brought before the court in Asansol by the police, who requested his custody to question him about the case.
The Asansol court judge granted Tiwari eight days in police custody.
A former Congress MP for Trinamool, Tiwari joined the BJP ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections in West Bengal.
His wife Chaitali, who is currently a BJP councilor in Asansol municipality, also joined the BJP with her husband. Family members of the victims of the stampede on December 14 had filed a complaint against Tiwari, former mayor of Asansol, and his wife.
