Voting to elect India’s next vice president ended at 5 p.m. The counting of the votes began with the proclamation of the result today.
Out of a total of 780 deputies, the PTI indicated that no less than 725 deputies had voted at the end of the ballot. With more than 50 deputies not exercising their right to vote, the voting percentage was 93%.
Voting began at 10 a.m. with Prime Minister Narendra Modi among the first to vote. Rahul Gandhi followed by several Congress MPs also voted.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in a wheelchair and needed help getting up and voting. CPM MP John Brittas was among those who helped the veteran leader exercise his candor.
Interior Minister Amit Shah and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan were among the leaders who showed up early in parliament. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP Chairman JP Nadda and Commerce Minister and House Leader in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal arrived together to vote.
Rajya Sabha Vice President Harivansh Singh also voted for the election. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar remained one of the last ministers to vote.
