The winter session of parliament is underway and the opposition is trying to corner the government on a host of issues, including a standoff with China, inflation and unemployment.

The Rajya Sabha is likely to pass the “Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill, 2022” and the “Constitutional Ordinances (SC and ST) (Second Amendment) Bill, 2022”.

The winter session of Parliament began on December 7 and will continue until December 29, with 17 sittings spread over 23 days.

#Rajya Sabha members punch holes in the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill, 2022

Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha on Monday ripped holes in the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill 2022, saying it encroached on the jurisdiction of the Environment Ministry and that the government should have presented the legislation after consultation by a standing committee of Parliament. The Bill was presented to the Rajya Sabha for passage on December 8, 2022 by Energy Minister RK Singh. It aims to promote the use of non-fossil fuels, including ethanol, green hydrogen and biomass. It also aims to help the country meet its international climate change commitments.

A bill to make the use of non-fossil energy sources such as biomass, ethanol and green hydrogen mandatory was passed by parliament on Monday. The bill provides penalties for violations committed by industrial units or ships, and against manufacturers if a vehicle fails to meet fuel consumption standards.

The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha.
