Psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, who treated Diego Maradona, on Friday denied any responsibility for the death in 2020 of the ex-Argentine football star, for which she was questioned by the prosecution.
The 36-year-old psychiatrist, a specialist in addictions, was heard for more than six hours by the public prosecutor of San Isidro, in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, as part of an investigation opened for “manslaughter with aggravating circumstances” against seven members of the Maradona medical team.
Dr Cosachov then left the prosecutor’s office without making any statements to the media, AFP found.
Diego Maradona, who suffered from kidney and liver problems, heart failure, neurological deterioration and addiction to alcohol and psychotropic drugs, died of a heart attack on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60 years.
“Inadequate, deficient and reckless” treatment
The prosecution suspects the caregivers of having “violated the duties incumbent on each of them (…) by increasing the risk beyond the authorized margin, which led to the fatal outcome of the patient, which could have been avoided ”.
At the beginning of May, an expert report concluded that Diego Maradona had been “abandoned to his fate” by his medical team, whose “inadequate, deficient and reckless” treatment had led to his agony of several hours.
“The doctor provided evidence that she did not commit a homicide (…) There is no suspicion that the psychiatric drugs could, at these doses, cause a failure of the heart”, said the lawyer of the psychiatrist, Vadim Mischanchuk.
“The cardiac pathology discovered during the autopsy did not translate into any symptoms when the patient was alive, which is why he was not treated for it in the clinics where he was treated”, continued the lawyer. .
“When he left the Olivos clinic (where he had been operated on for a hematoma in the head a few weeks before his death, editor’s note) his heart was working well,” he said.
The personal doctor heard on Monday
The hearings in the framework of the investigation will be closed on Monday with the summons of the neurosurgeon and personal doctor of Diego Maradona, Leopoldo Luque, 39 years old.
Before the psychiatrist and neurosurgeon, prosecutors heard from two nurses, their supervisor, a doctor coordinating home care and a psychologist.
During these hearings, Leopoldo Luque and Agustina Cosachov were singled out as the main health officials of the former captain of the Argentine selection.
“There is a responsibility of treating physicians. There were a lot of warning signs that Maradona was going to die overnight. None of the doctors did anything to prevent it ”, declared Me Rodolfo Baqué, advising nurse Dahiana Madrid.
The seven caregivers face a referral to court depending on the findings of the investigation, and if necessary sentences of 8 to 25 years in prison.
