Breaking news – Man killed by explosive device at gender reveal party in New York

Breaking news

An expectant father was killed when a device he was building for a sex reveal party exploded, New York police said on Monday. Christopher Pekny, 28, was assembling a device for his child’s gender reveal party in the town of Liberty in Catskills when it exploded just before noon on Sunday, state police said.

Pekny was killed in the blast and his 27-year-old brother, Michael Pekny, was injured, police said. He was treated for his injuries at a local hospital.

CBS New York reports that at Livingston Manor Diner, owned by the victim’s family, candles and flowers symbolize the grief felt by his friends and family. Pekny’s family released a statement saying they were heartbroken by his loss, but grateful for the outpouring of love and support from the community.

The death is the latest in a string of tragedies blamed on flawed gender reveal devices in recent years.

A Michigan man was killed earlier this month when struck by shrapnel from a gender revealing cannon used at a baby shower, authorities said.

Another gender revealing device started a forest fire in September 2020 that burned thousands of acres in Southern California.

In 2019, a grandmother was killed in a rural Iowa home when a sex-revealing explosive device detonated.
