Analysis. The left does not stop looking for itself. Since the end of François Hollande’s five-year term, this political family has been on the lookout. Both a structuring struggle, such as the class struggle or European construction, and a matrix of thought. With less than a year of the presidential election, no solution seems to have been found. If Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV) relies on political ecology as “New paradigm”, the Greens still suffer from numerous shortcomings, notably in the definition of the State and its role, but also of the Republic.
The traditional left (Socialist Party and French Communist Party), for its part, saw a contradiction: it still has militants (43,000 claimed for the PCF, 40,000 for the PS), a local establishment, a network of associations, but seems to be doomed to remain in limbo during the major election of the Ve Republic. Fabien Roussel (PCF) is credited with 1% to 2% of voting intentions and the socialist mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, tops out at around 7%.
France rebellious (LFI), finally, believed to have found the strategic Grail: left-wing populism. In short: building a border between a “We of the people” and one “Them of the oligarchy” and pass a “Right-left cleavage” which would be obsolete. With the score of Jean-Luc Mélenchon in 2017 (19% of the vote) and their group of seventeen deputies to the National Assembly, the “rebellious” considered themselves to be the “Main force of opposition” to Emmanuel Macron. But Mr. Mélenchon’s strategic changes, his movementism (support for “yellow vests”, rapprochement with all the new avant-garde such as political anti-racism embodied by the The Truth for Adama committee) disconcerted part of his electorate. In the 2019 European elections, LFI only obtained 6.3% of the vote.
The multiple “slippages” of its leader have also affected the credibility of the movement which will now find it difficult to pose as an alternative to Mr. Macron. Everyone remembers the images of Mr. Mélenchon crying “The Republic is me” during searches, in October 2018. More recently, these are his comments on the attacks “written in advance” which would take place before each presidential election, which caused confusion.
