The National Medical Commission announced on Friday that final year UG medical students who returned to India due to COVID and the Russian-Ukrainian war and received their degrees from their institutions no later than June 30, 2022 , will be eligible to sit for the Medical Graduate Examination Abroad.
They will have to complete a mandatory rotating medical internship (CRMI) for two years instead of the current year, after passing the Foreign Medicine Diploma (FMG) test”familiarize them with the practice of medicine under Indian conditionsthe NMC said in a public notice.
Only after passing the CRMI for two years will foreign medical graduates qualify for registration. The NMC added that the relaxation given to international medical students is a “one-off measure” and will not be tracked in the future.
Over the past two years, medical students studying abroad, including in China and Ukraine, have had to return to India due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
Nearly 18,000 Indian medical students fled war-torn Ukraine four months ago. Even though they took online classes, the physical labs took a hit. And without practical work, one cannot become a complete health professional.
