Up to 30 people attended the celebrations in the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street on June 19, 2020, according to reports

British media have uncovered another gathering attended by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in breach of his own Covid-19 restrictions in 2020, with Downing Street confirming the birthday party in question did indeed take place.

Johnson’s wife Carrie had thrown a surprise party for him in the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street on June 19, 2020, broadcaster ITV reported on Monday.

The event was attended by around 30 people, despite the ban on indoor gatherings in the UK at the time as part of anti-coronavirus measures. There was a cake, and Carrie reportedly led those gathered to sing happy birthday to the prime minister.

Some officials present at the rally denied ITV’s claim that 30 people attended. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told the BBC the group was much smaller and had worked together all day. Environment Secretary George Eustice said the number of people present was “closer to ten” adding that the whole event “was literally just a birthday cake brought in at the end of the day.

The anniversary gathering at 10 Downing Street came just hours after Johnson visited a school in Hertfordshire, where he posed with outstretched arms with students to re-emphasize the importance of social distancing for the British public .

And it wasn’t the Prime Minister’s only party that day, according to ITV, with a separate birthday celebration for family and friends being held at Johnson’s residence in the evening.

Downing Street has confirmed the Prime Minister attended an event at work, a government spokesperson insisting “He had been there less than ten minutes.”

“A group of staff working at No 10 that day gathered briefly in the Cabinet Room, after a meeting, to wish the Prime Minister a happy birthday.”

However, the spokesperson denied allegations of a second rally at Johnson’s apartment, saying: “This is totally untrue. In accordance with the rules at the time, the Prime Minister welcomed a small number of his family members outside that evening.”

The British Prime Minister is facing growing calls to resign amid recent revelations that he attended a series of parties during the UK’s first lockdown. The so-called ‘Partygate’ scandal has seen the 57-year-old’s ratings plummet, with a poll earlier this month suggesting two-thirds of voters want him out of office .

MPs from Johnson’s own Tory party also appear to be losing faith in the Prime Minister, with one telling the Guardian that the June 19 rally was “clearly social” and “changes things – a lot.”

Another unnamed conservative lawmaker said that “presumably there are more being stored for release after the Gray report, just in case it didn’t land the killing blow.”

He was referring to a crucial report by senior civil servant Sue Gray, who is investigating alleged breaches of lockdown rules by the Prime Minister, which is due to be released this week.
