A foreign policy expert has criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the Ukraine crisis, saying White House actions could “provoke” a Russian attack.

Anatol Lieven, senior Russia and Europe fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, took particular issue with President Biden telling Americans to leave Ukraine.

“It is utterly ridiculous and despicable for the United States to ‘support Ukraine’ by telling Americans to leave before there is any certainty that Russia will attack, or that if it attacks, something will happen. in Kyiv,” Lieven said in a statement.

Lieven, who has written books about Russia and tackling the “urgency” of climate change, said the Biden administration’s policies were undermining Ukraine’s independence.

“This has a terrible effect on the Ukrainian economy and international trust in Ukraine, and thus undermines Ukraine’s independence,” Lieven said. “Meanwhile, the United States is filling Ukraine with weapons that will not defeat Russia and may even provoke a Russian attack.

The Quincy Institute promotes “vigorous diplomacy” and a world where peace is the norm.

Biden continues to say there is a high likelihood that Russia will invade Ukraine, as Vladimir Putin has amassed around 150,000 troops near the border. World leaders, including Vice President Kamala Harris, gathered in Germany this weekend for the Munich Security Conference to work out diplomatic solutions.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., led a congressional delegation to the conference where she touted tough sanctions on Russia if Putin invaded.

Biden warned Americans in Ukraine to get out immediately and said the US military would not help them escape in the event of a Russian invasion because it risks starting a world war.

“It’s a world war when Americans and Russia start shooting at each other,” Biden told NBC anchor Lester Holt.
